Middle Quarters - St. Elizabeth
The tiny village of Middle Quarters, just outside of Black River, is famous all over Jamaica for one thing - "Pepper Shrimp". Groups of higglers line the road tempting passing travellers with bags of bright red spicy pepper shrimp. From their simple stalls (usually Dutch pots boiling on open grills and plastic bowls full of shrimp, set about a creaky wooden table) they sell one of the tastiest snacks available on the island.
The shrimp is boiled in salty water filled with crushed scotch bonnet peppers. The spicy and salty flavours compliment each other perfectly when absorbed in to the shrimp.
Most of the shrimps are caught in the nearby Black River but sometimes these catches are supplemented from nearby Westmoreland.© 2009 Jamaica Travel and Culture .com
